The severity of any disease is greatly influenced by the initial loading dose of the infection. Immediately take measures to social distance and those who do get infected start with very small doses. The biggest outbreak in the US is in the Orthodox Jewish Community in New York, which doesn't believe in vaccination. They actually had Covid parties inviting everyone over when one would get sick, hoping to avoid future vaccination. Now all ages in their community are dying. Stupid trumps everything else.
