Two weeks ago both my parents were in the ICU, then general medical floor. My brother who has medical issues moved into their house to be ready to care for them if they could get home. I work on the medical unit of a psychiatric hospital and four nursing facilities. I have been wearing a N 95 mask for the last 3 weeks for the many reasons above. As of 2 weeks ago no one in the medical hospital was wearing masks except a couple doctors in the ICU. A couple of foreign born nurses had masks. An American nurse came to me and rudely told me to leave if I was sick. I politely told her I was a physician and my reasoning. She was clearly not happy. During these days I quietly gave five N 95 masks to front line people who I knew did not have them. Also gave out articles on Lithium and chloroquine to the front line people before it became popular.
I then went back to work off family sick leave. People at the hospital scoffed or demanded I give them similar masks .Luckily I could tell them the clinical director demanded I wear a mask as a condition for returning to work. I truthfully told them I hate wearing a mask and there were smiles all around. I began an educational campaign on the virus and after reading up on the Italian and German data, put all the patients going regularly out to the hospital in one room and got them to voluntarily isolate for the good of others. They get some treats but their favorite is being told they are heroes. Organization can save far more than medical care at this point. You must have the data to make a difference. Data also lets you know when those in charge are making mistakes. I am moderate risk and can retire at anytime as several around me have. If I couldn't make a difference I would, but as I can, I will stick it out
