Hans,

ATI reported stock buyback of 1 billion dollars in Nov. Depending upon how fast they bought these, this could bump volume quite a bit. Volume was above avg. for awhile now below. Perhaps ATI wanted to get all buying in before earnings and has now done that - this would indicate that earnings will be good. On the other hand, stock has gone from 38-39 in Dec to 44-45 now, a pretty good jump. Perhaps potential buyers and sellers alike are adopting a wait and see posture, which would drop volume.
Regarding Feb 50 calls, you would have 4 weeks to see the share price move 11% above it's all-time high. I think that is quite possible, but risky because of the general market instability even if ATI blows out earnings. Look what happened after last earnings, a large surprise, but a market downturn blunted a rally in ATI stock price. The option price is cheap though, with the potential for fantastic returns if you are right. I bought all the options and leaps (April 40 and Jan99 40) I desire in Dec. so personally will not buy any more for now. Regards, and good luck.

Dave
