Having previously been COO of an IT professional services company a few years ago, I think what HAKI is saying is likely to be true. I think your analysis about higher wages and competition is correct - they are getting squeezed. Also, at some point companies will try to go direct - companies can save some money, and consultants can make some additional bucks by eliminating the middleman.
