Mr.D : I wouldn't worry about any short position if one even exists. There needs to be an underlying business and of course there also needs to be a market for the stock.

This is "extortion," which is the obtainment of money from another by coercion, which means to compel an action by pressure or threat.

I can't believe you wrote the above sentence without even realizing it destroyed your argument. Do you understand "who" is forcing the short to cover? I assure you it is not the shareholders who called for their certificates. Calling for certificates is not only legal, it is a right that certain agencies will defend.

The price set is artificial: it in no way depends on the true value of the goods being sold.

This is why it is called a market. The market determines the price based on supply and demand. Fair value would make for a very boring market.
