Local interconnect has nothing to do with the number of I/O pins.

Perhaps you are confusing this with C4 solder bump interconnect technology.

Local interconnect has nothing whatsoever to do with allowing more i/o pins. Where did you get this idea? Also, addition i/o's would have no effect on fault detection.
