====================================================================== PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1998--
Eight Dynamic System Domains and 20,000-User Support Capability Clinch Starfire System's Supremacy Among High-End Servers
Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced its Sun(TM) Enterprise(TM) 10000 (also known as Starfire(TM)) server was selected as a "Hot Product" by Data Communications magazine. According to the January 1998 issue of Data Communications, the Sun Enterprise 10000 UNIX(R) server received the distinction for achieving mainframe-class performance in the data center. Data Communications magazine offers "Hot Product" awards annually, based on feedback from end-users on popular networking products and rigorous evaluation by a panel of judges comprised of the publication's editorial staff. According to an editorial by Data Communications Executive Editor Stephen Saunders in the January 1998 issue, each winning product possesses a distinguishing feature that not only surpasses competitive offerings but also captures tangible financial benefits for the end-user. The current issue, titled "Hot Products: The Brightest Ideas in Networking," praises the Enterprise 10000 server for accommodating up to 20,000 users and increasing system response time while doing away with the need for multiple servers. End-user feedback and editorial staff analysis identified five-way dynamic domain partitioning as the Enterprise 10000 server's most compelling advantage. Sun recently enhanced this feature by expanding the capability to support up to eight domains. Dynamic domain partitioning means that system processors, memory and storage components can be logically sectioned into distinct domains, with each domain receiving the equivalent of dedicated server performance. As recognized by the publication, the Enterprise 10000 server's domain partitioning feature allows for an endless variety of application configurations, which means that network managers can dynamically distribute system resources according to the demands of the applications.
Enterprise 10000 Server's Momentum in the Enterprise
Since the Enterprise 10000 server began shipping early last year, Sun has witnessed phenomenal demand for the product. Designed to run alongside legacy systems, the Enterprise 10000 server has gained momentum with customers wishing to consolidate systems; build new data warehouses, intranets or decision-support systems; run Enterprise Resource Planning applications (SAP, Baan, Oracle, PeopleSoft, etc.); or for those who simply need to upgrade to a more powerful, scalable system that will grow with their company's business needs. "This server enables us to stay ahead of customer growth," said James Holtman, vice president of technology at Cincinnati Bell Information Systems (CBIS), in the January 1998 issue of Data Communications. CBIS uses the Enterprise 10000 server in a full 64-processor configuration to process more than 260 million bills each year for its personal communications services (PCS) business. Holtman notes that the domaining capability of the Enterprise 10000 server presents a key advantage for partitioning customer data while enabling quick reaction times to changes in the exploding PCS market. "The Starfire is the first symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) server to rival the mainframe in functionality while outperforming other UNIX competitors in the data center," said Shahin Khan, director of marketing for Sun's Data Center and High Performance Computing Products Group. "The high-end server marketplace has embraced the Starfire server because it combines the best of both worlds in one unbeatable product. We are honored that Data Communications has recognized this accomplishment." The Enterprise 10000 server comes equipped with up to 64 processors and provides customers with exceptional value and reliability for mission-critical applications. The system offers RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) features unique to Unix servers, including Dynamic System Domains, Dynamic Reconfiguration, System Service Processor (SSP), Alternate Pathing and no single point of failure functionality. The Enterprise 10000 server runs the Solaris(TM) operating environment and maintains binary compatibility with the largest base of Unix applications for proven robustness. The server is a high-end extension to Sun's highly successful Sun Enterprise family of servers.
