Last couple of times I was in Hong Kong I spent a good bit of my time visiting with market participants. Back then there was still a trading floor. I didn't know anyone, so I just showed up, hung out, met interesting people, learned who was who and who was where, and then visited their various offices. Lots of expat Americans and Brits in the brokerages and banks. The Central Clearing and Settlement System was brand new and just being tested. Outside the exchange there was a black light board with red pin lights listing the names and prices of the very newly trading Chinese shares... which, of course, I was not allowed to buy... but it seemed like finding a way of throwing a few bucks at it might be worthwhile. Almost everything on the board was under $1... It's been fascinating to watch.
