The reason is the same poisonous idea that you have = people are fungible = one size fits all = clone units.

As you correctly notice in this case, everyone is different and everyone is in a unique situation at any instant.

Any perceived fungibility is false. People might be very similar but all are unique including identical twins.

People have strong needs for identity, belonging, and fitting into the cash flow and dominance hierarchy pyramids. So they will even agree with things that they know are wrong. Or else. Individuals vary but it's a question of degree. Some are all for Big Brother and some for Libertarian. Others fit in the spectrum.
