Gregory,

Actually, Scotty is very jealous of Gates. He would like to be in the same league as Gates but he is an operations guy and does not have as good a grasp of technology as Gates does. He was also a marginal student unlike Gates. But his father was an exec at American motors and he had a lot of influence with a Michagan pension fund that invested heavily in Sun. I think that is how scotty got the job. He relies on his technical staff for his speeches and other technological leadership issues. He couldn't even put together his own SparcStation. But he has done pretty well with Sun.

The problem is that a lot of his staff do not know what they are doing technologically but they play an excellent game of corporate hockey.
So they have a lot of pols in charge of the different operations.

The guy who left for Novell (Schmidt) was pretty good technically and politically. You have to kiss Scotty --- to survive in the upper circle.
