I did a search of Cirrus Logic and VGA related terms and came up with about 60 granted patents just for their Graphics products. Lots of portable as well as desktop graphics patents. In looking at S3, there were 5 for the company as a whole.

Some interesting ones from Cirrus:

5,581,279 VGA controller circuitry - the integration of VGA controller, RAMDAC, and clock generator. Seems like everyone infringes on this!

5,608,864 Variable pixel depth and format for video windows - I thought Brooktree had done this first (maybe they didn't patent it?)

5,630,043 Animated texture map apparatus and method for 3-D image displays - Video texture maps from an MPEG source for cool 3D games!

5,664,162 Graphics accelerator with dual memory controllers - Isn't this S3's DuoView technology?
