Speaking of which, Sailor aboard 4th U.S. aircraft carrier tests positive for coronavirus Politicoby Natasha Bertrand and Lara Seligman A sailor assigned to the USS Nimitz, a Bremerton, Wash.-based aircraft carrier, tested positive for Covid-19 last week after experiencing symptoms while on board the ship, according to three defense officials familiar with the matter. The positive test makes the Nimitz the Navy's fourth aircraft carrier so far to report a positive case among crew members. The individual was put into isolation and removed from the ship. Contact tracing — or monitoring those who came into contact with the infected sailor — was done in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the officials said. Another crew member has also tested positive, but that person has not been onboard the ship, the officials said. The positive cases comes as the ship is getting ready to deploy. The USS Theodore Roosevelt is battling the spread of the virus on board, with more than 150 positive Covid-19 cases so far. The ship, which was on a Pacific deployment, is now docked in Guam and has been working to evacuate thousands of sailors and quarantine them in hotel rooms on the island. The Roosevelt’s commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, was relieved of his duties last week after writing a letter to Navy leaders urging "decisive action" to remove the "majority of personnel" from the carrier amid a spike in coronavirus cases on board. The letter subsequently appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Crozier's hometown paper. Two other carriers — the USS Ronald Reagan undergoing maintenance in Japan, and the USS Carl Vinson undergoing maintenance in Puget Sound — have also reported positive cases. The Nimitz has been preparing for an onboard quarantine of sorts to both reduce sailors’ exposure and more easily monitor them for symptoms, and everyone is staying in one place and being screened regularly, according to Cmdr. John Fage, a spokesman for 3rd Fleet. Commanders have been told "to bring the crew on board the ship in order to minimize potential COVID exposure in an effort to maximize warfighting readiness and ensure the health of the force,” Fage told POLITICO in a statement. “This direction is in accordance with U.S. Pacific Fleet guidance to ensure we do not spread COVID-19." Fage would not comment on Nimitz deployment plans, or whether the ship would be relieving the Roosevelt in the Pacific. “As a matter of operational security, it is U.S. Pacific Fleet policy not to discuss future exercises, operations, or ship movements,” he said
