Start with desired result, backfill everything with made up data.
Actually, many models are created that way. And there's value to that method. You want to see what it takes to get to the desired result.

The problem is when you also tweak the behavior of the model not to accurately reflect reality, but instead to make the numbers look good.

As I said in a post earlier today, we just saw the motivation behind overestimating the death toll for the coronavirus pandemic. Both Trump and the mayor of San Jose are guilty of it.

Now if they have a vested interest in inflating the estimates, think about all the people that base their reputations and their livelihoods on inflated models of global warming. (Or as Bill Nye the so-called "Science Guy" called it, "global heating" or "global cooking.")
