Derek,

>>Norm, I hadn't noticed this comment when I previously responded to your post. I can tell you first hand that MACS cannot multitask like Windows NT or OS/2, or Unix. As I write this I can turn on a very sophisticated "Autorouter" that will automatically put in circuit paths on a circuit board, run MS Flight simulator and download multiple large files as I talk on the phone connected to my PC while my printer prints out a document. There is NO way you can do that with a MAC, perhaps with Rhapsody but not the current OS. Of course for your need's a MAC is probably perfect and I'm certainly not knocking them.

Yes, OS 8 lacks pre-emptive multi-tasking and as far as I know uses a cooperative multi-tasking scheme. But you are right, for my home needs I do seldom run more than 1 or 2 apps. Properly designed cooperative multi-tasking systems can actually do a lot, if the threads are "cooperative". Unfortunately many programs do not always do this! When I start programming tasks on the Mac I will see what its limits are but right now I can not comment on that. It could be that most programs do not take advantage of the system very well.

We used to run Windows3.0 as a task under RMX and I have always wondered why it took so long for OS's to adopt pre-emptive multi-tasking. Its been around for awhile now!

Cheers,

Norm
