Jan, looks to me like the write offs were included in the R+D budget as reported on the income statement.

Bottom line here is that the bad man Gary Johnson is out of power. It will take a few quarters for S3 to recover from the mess he left. Maybe a bounce here and there, but do not expect any sustained uptrend until Fall '98 earliest. Terry Holdt brings back some credibility, but it will take new high end product design wins before stock starts moving again for real.

From 17.7 million last year for the same period to 35.7 million now.
Also, within the last FY was it up strongly.

This strong commitment to R&D plus today's announcement of the patent
and cross-licensing deal has got to pay dividends down the road. Not
too many S3 competitors can afford to make allocate the same resources
without putting the company in jeopardy.>

If they have been sitting on these patents since last summer perhaps that explains at least part of the increase in r & d.

Are we about to see s3 release a microprocessor chip?

Anyone care to venture a guess??
