>>Speaking of removable storage, a friend of mine told me of a $30 kit that allows one to convert a 1,4G hd into a portable storage. Allegedly it allows one to access through a parallel port and have much the same function as anything Syquest or IOM have for a much cheaper price. Is this a threat to IOM business model? Has anyone had any experience with this kit? TIA jyatsu<<

JYatsu,

Yes, I have heard of this kit. I believe it's been around for quite some time. This does not threaten Iomega's business model since the converted hard drive you envision, while portable, is not of the removable sort.

RE: Kit to convert HD to portable storage.

JYatsu,

Yes, these have been around for quite a while. They used to cost more like $100. $30 seems reasonable. It's really a simple product.

Where it differs from Zip is that it's too technical for most computer users. Iomega focuses on the mass consumer, who just wants something convenient to save him time and make things easier.

If you're technical, looking at the device for yourself, don't need the speed of SCSI or IDE, and don't need to share removables with others, this could be a good alternative. Otherwise, just get a Zip. ;)
