Steve, DEC users have been waiting for ANYONE to buy DEC so that they could relax. And DEC salespeople have spent far more than 10% of their energies reassuring their users that there was hope for the future.

IMHO, CPQ will appear to the average DEC user as a combination of "deep pockets", a PC maker and the people who make the stockmarket run (Tandem). They might even get so comfortable and excited that they upgrade their VAXs and add a few PCs too.

If Packard-Bell had bought DEC, then there would be smething to worry about. But with Compaq as their new caretaker, DEC users will be drinking champagne tonight.
