I agree in concept that each state need to be involved in decisions regarding reopening their economies. But the problem we face is that we have a mobile population which can spread viruses from state to state very quickly. It’s stunning to read about the impact Florida’s spring breakers had in spreading the virus to places like New York and the Midwest. So for example if Florida says all is well and convinces Disneyworld to reopen, I fear the virus could restart big time nationwide in a heartbeat.

It’s been remarkable to me how quickly and completely people adapted to isolation and masking requests/demands. I think early models that predicted much higher rates of infection and deaths assumed maybe 50% social isolation, and the realty has been closer to 90%, hence models being adjusted downward.

My hope is that this virus will behave like many others and naturally fade during warmer weather. But if we don’t have a viable vaccine by this fall, next winter could result in a big spike up in cases and deaths, sinc e we collectively seem to have short memories when it comes to inconveniencing ourselves .
