Sony, as you probably know, DEC's shareholders were not in love with Palmer. We all felt that DEC could have done better with a CEO who had a greater appreciation for shareholder value. DEC's stock performance lagged the industry's performance for many years. DEC was more of a trading stock than a long term investment.

The buyout by CPQ was anticipated for sometime, however, the timing seems to have taken everyone by surprise. I haven't decided on whether or not I will keep the CPQ stock, I'll wait and see how it performs over the next few weeks. However, I suspect that I will keep the stock for the long term. Yesterdays drop in CPQ was expected given the buyout announcement. What surprised me was the magnitude of the decline. I didn't expect to see a 2 3/4 point decline.

As far as another bid is concerned, I think the only other likely contenter is Dell. CPQ has now presented Dell with some potential serious business problems. Will be interesting to see what Dell does.

Once the deal is finalized, I think the DEC employees are in for some more changes...layoffs, dropping of product lines, merging of G&A functions, etc.

Guess I'll be moving over to the CPQ thread and see what's going on over there.
