I think those are laces, not scarves. Yes, the sneakers do have laces already in them (not relevant btw), so not sure the practicality of using laces in this context. But as this is about math, not practicality, because, you know, statistics say that practically nobody uses math in a practical way, it shouldn't matter what those truly are.
