3COM MOVES TO MAKE CONVERGED NETWORKS A REALITY
WITH NEW PRODUCTS AND ALLIANCES FOCUSED ON
COMBINING VOICE, VIDEO AND DATA

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1998--

Strategic Alliance with Newbridge, Voice Over the Internet, Gigabit Ethernet and ADSL All
Contribute to Converged

Network Solutions 3Com Corp. (NASDAQ:COMS) today announced a series of significant
new products and alliances that will greatly accelerate the widespread deployment of voice,
video and data applications on a single, converged network.

The announcements were made in conjunction with the ComNet Conference in Washington
where 3Com Chairman and CEO Eric Benhamou is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on
the emerging market for converged networks. The announcements include: -- A long-term
strategic alliance between 3Com and Newbridge Networks to resell each other's local area
network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) products and to cooperate in the development
and deployment of next-generation, converged networks supporting comprehensive voice, video
and data applications.

-- New voice over the Internet capabilities to enable Internet service providers (ISPs) to offer
long-distance telephone calls and faxes over the Internet for the price of local calls. -- New
lower price-point products for Fast- and Gigabit-Ethernet information flow to yield productivity
increases for businesses adding voice and video applications to their data networks.

-- Support for the Universal Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Working Group.
"Converged networks -- or the merging of voice, video and data on a single wire -- will be a
significant trend in 1998, and by the year 2000, 25% of corporate enterprise networks will be
converged networks," said Benhamou. "A single converged network infrastructure has the
potential to drive radical changes in every aspect of how people and organizations communicate
and use information. The range of new applications and potential cost savings are enormous."

Benhamou's keynote address at the ComNet 98 industry show in Washington on Jan. 27 will
focus on converged networks. The address will be broadcast live on the Internet at:
3com.com, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 3Com and Newbridge
Strategic Alliance The 3Com/Newbridge alliance provides the industry's best end-to-end,
policy-based solution for the union of data, voice and video applications on standards-based
networks. As part of the agreement, 3Com will resell Newbridge's market-leading ATM WAN
switching hardware and leading WAN network management software, strengthening 3Com's
position in the enterprise market. Concurrently, Newbridge will offer 3Com's market-leading
LAN and WAN access products. Voice Over IP

In addition, 3Com announced Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) for the Total Control(TM)
remote access concentrator. The Total Control system enables ISPs to complement their data
offering to enterprise and consumer customers with value-added services such as voice, fax,
virtual private networking and content -- all delivered on a single platform. This expanded
capability will enable ISPs to offer long-distance telephone calls and faxes over the Internet for
the price of local calls. It will also facilitate Web commerce by allowing users to click on
hyperlinks and immediately be connected to customer support agents while concurrently viewing
Web pages.

The Total Control VOIP system is a carrier-class remote access application for the existing
Total Control platform. Network operations centers for major carriers and network service
providers will now be able to manage one integrated network instead of multiple vertical
networks. IBM Global Network, Siemens, Sprint and USA Global Link are in VOIP field trials.
The Total Control system is the market leader with a 40% share, according to recently released
analyst studies. Fast and Gigabit-Ethernet

As enterprise businesses face the prospects of deploying a new generation of powerful
computer applications with increased data volumes, they are bracing themselves for the next big
shift in networking: a leap from traditional Ethernet to Gigabit networks with a 100-fold
performance boost. In response to this demand, 3Com is introducing a complete high-bandwidth
solution from desktop computers to the data center. The new networks combine 1000 megabit
per second (Gigabit Ethernet) equipment at the core with the intermediate performance level --
10/100 megabit per second -- at the desktop. This range of faster networking equipment
provides the necessary bandwidth for the emerging converged networking market. Support of
Universal ADSL Working Group

3Com is announcing its support of the Universal Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
Working Group. The commercialization and standardization of Universal ADSL is a key
component to 3Com's comprehensive ADSL product lines. 3Com's support is evidence of its
continuing commitment to innovation and leadership in personal Internet access and building a
migration path from 56kbps to multigigabit ADSL speeds. The Working Group is an important
step in furthering industry cooperation and subsequent standards setting for ADSL and bringing
this high-speed technology to 3Com's consumer, small business, enterprise and carrier markets.

3Com will take the lead in helping the industry agree on a standard implementation of the
technology as well as work with other companies to ensure that there is widespread
interoperablility between products from different companies. 3Com ADSL products are
currently being used around the world in carrier trials and as part of enterprise solutions for
customers ranging from Sheraton Hotels to Princeton University. About 3Com 3Com
