Microsoft capitulate? Never! www5.zdnet.com And that's why we love them so. Unfortunately, this is another space cadet from the press division of the nefarious international ilk conspiracy, so he doesn't quite see it that way.In so keeping to character, Microsoft missed its great opportunity. The showdown over the contempt citation gave the company its best and possibly last chance to show that it has learned something on its own about what it takes to respond fairly and openly with courts, the government and, by extension, other companies in the computer industry. The time was ripe for Microsoft to show that it could stage the kind of turnabout in its corporate character that would rival the aboutface it launched two years ago, regarding its complacence toward the Internet and the effect it would have on its long-term future. Maybe it's too late for Microsoft to reinvent itself as a company, to show potential partners or rivals that it is not out to run them out of business at every possible turn. What they got instead was classic Microsoft, a pragmatic settlement that really lets it go on doing what it intended to do along. I'd leave out the pragmatic part, but that's petty semantics. The consent decree was widely interpreted as meaningless from the start, and the proposed remedies weren't much better. So, if the nonpolitical Reagan-Bush appointees in the appeals pannel see it Bill's way, it's not a big deal. On to the next battle. Sherman? State's rights? EU? Who can say. The Microspinmeisters will have some time to portray themselves as the friends of developers everywhere, Ballmer will get to plant his tree, maybe Bill will dust off his blue suede shoes (Kinder and Gentler III?) Who knows, maybe they'll even figure out a ship date for NT5. Cheers, Dan.
