SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1998--
--NOC 2000 is the First Extranet Access Switch for Mid-Size Companies; Features Role-Based Management--
Bay Networks(R), Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today introduced the NOC 2000(TM), the first Extranet Access Switch designed for mid-sized companies. This is the first product release resulting from the acquisition last week of New Oak Communications, Inc. The NOC 2000 accentuates the Access and IP Services cornerstones of Bay Networks' Adaptive Networking strategy, and its commitment to provide customers with leading-edge technologies that allow scalable, secure, and manageable use of the Internet for private communication, collaboration, and commerce. The NOC 2000 offers the same high performance, scalability, security, and manageability as the recently announced NOC 4000(TM). The NOC 4000 supports large enterprises with up to 2,000 simultaneous remote users, and the NOC 2000 opens up the Extranet access market to organizations with up to 200 concurrent remote users. This enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deploy Extranet access services to a broader customer base. "With the introduction of the NOC 2000 Extranet Access Switch, Bay Networks is opening up the Extranet access market to an expanded group of companies," said Michael Feinstein, director of product management, Bay Networks Extranet Access Division. "Companies of all sizes can now offer employees and partners access to their corporate network remotely via the Internet. This allows organizations to open up their networks and applications to the outside world to more effectively conduct business." Building off the Bay Networks Extranet Access software foundation, the NOC 2000 is a comprehensive device optimized for remote access over the Internet. The product combines cutting-edge technology for tunneling, VPNs, encryption, bandwidth management, firewall security, and routing in a single hardware platform, eliminating the need for costly, traditional remote access systems. The NOC 2000 is an LDAP directory-enabled networking product that lets network managers use powerful directories from companies such as Microsoft, Novell, and Netscape, to provide custo
mized network access to users. At the same time, administration time and complexity are dramatically reduced. This allows partners and employees of corporations to collaborate and transact business over the Internet, while guaranteeing appropriate levels of access based on the individual users' identity. Bay Networks provides a solution designed from the ground up to provide Personal Extranets(TM), those that customize access based on the user's identity, to users and partners.
NOC 2000 Eliminates Network Management Hassles Through Role-Based Management
CIOs are struggling with the business demands of supporting network access for increasing numbers of remote users and partners. The NOC 2000 features Role-Based Management (RBM), which enables joint management of Extranet access between a company and an ISP. Companies can therefore outsource management of the physical infrastructure to service providers whose business it is to keep networks up and running. It frees IT managers and administrators to focus on managing network services within the organization. "Bay Networks has solved a thorny problem for enterprises wanting to outsource their Extranet access," said John McConnell, president of McConnell Consulting. "Their Role-Based Management implementation permits a rich and clearly defined interaction boundary between service providers and enterprise customers. Bay Networks' offerings are growing the Extranet market by solving real problems for customers and leading the way by showing service providers how to succeed in this rapidly emerging space." Role-Based Management would allow, for example, an ISP to manage the modems for an organization, while the internal IT administrator would retain control of the security functions of the network. RBM lets IT managers and ISPs focus on their respective technical and application strengths to ease the entire management burden. The NOC 2000 is available immediately for trial.
Adaptive Networking
Bay Networks' Adaptive Networking strategy addresses three key trends in the networking industry: the exploding popularity of the Internet; convergence on a high-volume standard Internet Protocol (IP) -- the "grand unifier" of global network infrastructures; and cost-effective hardware based on leading-edge ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) technology. These changes will benefit the user with increased innovation, lower cost, extended product life cycles, and "plug-and-play" interoperability for heterogeneous networks. Through Adaptive Networking, Bay Networks provides more open, high-level services to customers while reducing the complexity of their networks. Bay Networks is focusing on key cornerstone technologies -- switching/routing, access, IP services and network management. These transparent, scalable technologies ensure long-term, non-disruptive network evolution and investment protection; drive operational productivity at every level of the network; and adapt to changes in network usage and business requirements. The hallmark of Adaptive Networking is the immediate flexibility that the products under its umbrella exhibit to detect and adapt to changes in network traffic types, volumes and requirements -- both today and tomorrow.
