Every society should be free to respond in the way that preserves their values as a society. In Sweden and Taiwan, they weighed the balance of short term damage to lives vs long term damage to lives from a shut down and decided against it. They rightly figured out that they can respond in a responsible way without infantilizing their adult population, but rather their governments realized that they are there to serve the people, not to treat them like idiots that must be told what to do. Americans have become to in enamored of the idea that the government can solve all their problems. That will not have a good ending, I can assure you. Let me give you one example. We have a mask shortage right now. You know why? It's because our government responded to profiteering by threatening to arrest people and confiscating their goods for redistribution. In short, they acted just like a good Socialist Gestapo and like Maduro and Chavez did in Venezuela. Confiscation and threats. So now, we have shortages even as local and state governments are telling the citizens they need to wear a mask or they could get fined or arrested. It's the standard illogic of government. Arrested if you do and arrested if you don't. What could our government have done differently, that would have also been consistent with our Constitution and the 245 year history of American values? They could have jawboned how gross and immoral it is to profiteer and urge people to price masks responsibly and to take up the patriotic banner for their fellow man, but let the free market work. I can guarantee you, we would have seen 10,000 entrepreneurs spring into action to make masks and they would have made good money for it, until the fat profits were no longer to be found. In short order, the supply of N-95 masks would have flooded the US and everyone would have access to cheap masks, instead of just the first responders and health care workers. Because profits lead to a rush to create more supply in free markets, until the profits are arbitraged out of the market. It's Econ 101. Instead, government intervened to set prices, through confiscation and arrest threats, and shortages have ruled the day. Way to go Big Government! I wish US government would stop doing us favors. They screw things up every time.
