Fred, I am not technically competent enough to answer your question and it is too bad that some of the tech folks have not posted here recently. But I do believe this product directly competes with what you are talking about and will be chosen by some companies as more suitable or what they need today...others may continue to work with other systems more suitable to what you are referring to--engineering & product design workflow. But don't sell Livelink short...just look at the clients, HWP, Motorola, Siemens, Newbridge...Livelink has a lot of capabilities but the best thing would be to check out the interactive demo at OTEXF's web site...or to contact the co. directly.

If engineers are sharing info regarding designs etc. it is feasible that things will migrate from older proprietary (albeit sophisticated) models, to more contemporary open standards...presumably many docs. & plans can be converted to a common format more suitable to sharing via an Intranet or the web...hence Livelink may have room for considerable growth!

My technical knowledge is not great & I would welcome a tutorial from anyone who knows more.

PDM systems are document management systems on steroids -- they have additional functionality specific to managing product engineering information -- including mechanical and electronic hardware designs, embedded software, and complex documents -- throughout the entire product lifecycle -- from bid to design, from planning to manufacture, from manufacture to delivery, and through support and upgrade.

Check out sherpa.com for an example.

Are they competitive with DM systems? To some degree. But more like general purpose DM systems are invading PDM turf rather than the other way around.
