Also if having the disease does give you mid to long term protection from catching it again, then you would have a much larger immune population.

This is true but has it been established that getting the disease once does in fact confer mid- to long term protection? IMHO, it is too soon to assert that. Some coronaviruses certainly do not confer that kind of protection.

That is a terrible thought given how infectious this disease is.
