I agree that Lockheed's Waterloo was a result of the failure of the L1011. The late near-great Richard Nixon did three things that deservedly relegate him to the dustbin of history: 1) he imposed the 55 mph speed limit 2) he imposed wage and price controls, and 3) he bailed out Lockheed (I think).

You may be right about AMC never having the tank business- I feel the concrete under my feet cracking. I'll try to check up on it. My recollection obviously does not square with your memory that C had the tank biz at the time of the bailout. Could you be confusing it with Chrysler Aerospace?? I confirm that AMC had Jeep, which they bought from Kaiser.

P.S. The M-1 tank was named Abrams, not Abraham, and was named in honor of the late four star general Creighton Abrams.
