UK-headquartered W Resources posted a substantial increase in tungsten and tin output from its La Parrilla mine in Extremadura, Spain for Q1 2020, as the project continued its ramp up. Tungsten concentrates production rose by more than 240% to 33t WO3 (26t contained W), while tin output increased over 200% to 12.1t.

The La Parrilla project was commissioned in Q4 2019 with an initial nameplate capacity of 1.4ktpy contained W and 200tpy tin concentrate in the first phase, rising to capacity of 2ktpy contained W and 500tpy tin in the second phase. Planned mine life is 11 years. Roskill has projected that the mine could produce as much as 500t W in 2020, which would likely require steady-state operations to be reached in the September quarter of 2020.

In its quarterly report, W Resources noted that, while production continued to increase, ramp up had been hampered by “early stage plant challenges” resulting in unplanned downtime. Mechanical issues with the jig and crusher plants have since been reported to be resolved.

Operations were also affected by the Spanish government announcing a state of emergency, which included a lockdown period affecting all non-essential businesses (including mining) from 14 March. Non-essential businesses returned to production on 14 April. With restrictions lifted, W Resources noted in its 17 April report that the crusher and jig plants had resumed production and that the full concentrator plant circuit would restart imminently. This was following the installation of cyclones on the spirals.
