It's not to be better than others. That's a trivial irrelevant matter.

That would be true if the issue were one of ego, only...

But, in context, its just a simple statement of fact in requirement. Survival, when you are doing things that others aren't doing... requires that you be better than others.

It's not a unique issue... its the same thing as being first chair in the orchestra ? Or, the same thing as being at the top of your profession... in anything ?

If you are going free solo while climbing an overhanging cliff a couple of hundred feet up...

Survival depends on the analysis... but you can't "think" your way through the risk with analysis ?

Here's a Youtube link with a fun bit of analysis...

Alex Honnold Breaks Down Iconic Rock Climbing Scenes | GQ Sports

And, here's Youtube of that guy climbing:

" In 2017, when Alex Honnold made his stunning free-solo ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan..."

Most people will survive that risk... by simply opting to not free climb overhanging cliffs ?

For the average couch potato... the risk is not a trivial or irrelevant matter ?

You have to be better than others... in that one thing... just to participate... ?
