Microsoft management knows that splitting the stock will make it run up. Thus, by splitting the stock, they are really saying that they no-longer want to keep the stock down (as you know, over the last 7 months, Microsoft had done everything in their power to keep the stock down (they really meant it--as in, it wasn't merely the traditional lowballing that they have always done)).

Personally, I would have preferred a 3:2 split, if anything. But the point is, Microsoft is telling us that they don't mind if the stock goes up. How they told us (ie, but splitting the stock) is not important, the general message is.
