Tiger,
Your answer gets an A, but I was looking for the A+ answer. However, I didn’t qualify the time period where in my opinion Custer got countrywide recognition as being a hero..I mentioned that he had been previous court martial..in fact he was court martial two..the first one was so minor he wouldn’t have been hauled before his peers, but did something unbecoming for an officer. The second one was some serious stuff..in fact he was kicked out of the Army...plus he finished last in his class at West Point. After he was kicked out...a friend in high place got him reinstated.
After the debacle in Montana there was a nation wide effort over a long period of time that made him into a hero. Only by getting killed he saved himself from a third time in a military court. I’m giving you one more chance for the A+.
Also..in my original post I alluded to one brother being killed with him..that should have been plural brothers, plus other blood relatives. There was only one family member who was forgiving him from getting so many family members killed.
