There were respected economists who argued against seat belts because it would just lead to people driving more dangerously, and ultimately INCREASE injuries and death. Now we have seat belts, AND safer cars too - somewhat thanks to government and people seeing the evidence (remember those movies in driver training class?)

Same with manditory motorcycle helmets. That worked out ok despite the ugly fight that had left and right bedfellows.

I'd say with population control, there is a human rights conflict - the right to have life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the most people vs. overpopulation's consequences including famines, disease and wars.

Anybody paying attention overpopulated India famines and violence lately?
