Vina Technologies And Pairgain Technologies Enter Into Oem And
Development Partnership

Companies to Offer Integrated, Low Cost Voice and Data HDSL Solution for Small to Mid-sized
Business Market

WASHINGTON, D.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1998-- VINA Technologies and PairGain Technologies, Inc.
(Nasdaq: PAIR - news) today announced a technology and distribution partnership that offers an integrated, low cost
HDSL-based (High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) voice, data and Internet access solution. The agreement calls for PairGain
to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) VINA Technologies' T1 Integrator and VINA Technologies to incorporate
PairGain's HDSL technology into its T1 Integrator product family.

This partnership addresses the increasing demand for advanced new services from small and medium sized business customers.
VINA's and PairGain's integrated HDSL solution will enable network service providers (including regional Bell operating
companies, competitive local exchange carriers and independent telephone companies) to combine voice and data
communications while significantly reducing the cost of T1 deployment. The product combines all the equipment necessary to
route voice and data over HDSL at T1 speeds, including a built-in channel bank, router, multiplexer, Internet firewall and
SNMP management.

''VINA Technologies is focused on enabling service providers to cost-effectively integrate voice, data and Internet while
lowering their infrastructure costs,'' said Josh Soske, president of VINA Technologies. ''Adding HDSL to the T1 Integrator
provides the phone companies the transmission technology of choice, while significantly lowering the cost of voice and data
deployment.''

''This strategic partnership with VINA Technologies is designed to expand the T1 market by providing network service
providers with a multi-service HDSL solution for the small business market,'' said Charles Strauch, CEO of PairGain.
''Working together we are able to offer our customers a low cost solution that will allow them to compete for the growing small
business voice and data services market.''

Integrated HDSL

With the federal deregulation of the telephone industry, telephone and network service providers are looking to compete in the
$7 billion small business market. Today HDSL is deployed by all five of the RBOCs, Bell Canada, and all major independent
telephone companies in the U.S. and Canada to deliver T1 service to their business customers. PairGain is the undisputed
HDSL market leader having garnered over 70 per cent market share in North America with over 400,000 systems installed to
date.

About T1 Integrator and HiGain T1 Systems
The T1 Integrator

VINA's T1 Integrator enables small and mid-sized businesses and branch offices to combine their voice, data and Internet
traffic over a single T1 line, optimizing the use of the T1. The T1 Integrator integrates a 24-channel channel bank, a router, a
multiplexer, frame relay or Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), a T1 DSU/CSU, an HDSL modem, an Internet firewall, Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) for Internet addressing, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for
incorporation into network management systems such as HP OpenView, and HTTP for management through an Internet
standard browser. It is the only piece of equipment needed to interconnect a small office to the access provider's T1 facility. If
the access provider offers both voice and Internet services, all user needs are served via the T1 Integrator.

The HiGain System

PairGain's HDSL-based HiGain(R) systems are the telephone companies' fastest and most cost-effective way of deploying T1
or E1 services to deliver high-speed data, video and voice over ordinary copper wire pairs. Its HiGain product line is the most
advanced and comprehensive HDSL offering on the market today. HiGain systems provide plug-and-play repeaterless T1 and
E1 service over one or two pairs of unconditioned copper telephone lines at distances of up to 12,000 feet or more, when
PairGain doublers are deployed. The products are being deployed by all five RBOCs , Bell Canada and nearly all major
independent telephone companies in the U.S. and Canada.

Demonstration at ComNet

VINA Technologies (Booth No. 1846) and PairGain (Booth No. 1246) will demonstrate an ''industry first'' HDSL
multi-service platform geared toward small to mid-sized businesses and branch offices. A live demonstration of integrated voice
and high-speed Internet access over ordinary copper wire pairs will demonstrate the interoperability between VINA
Technologies' T1 Integrator and PairGain's HiGain HDSL.

Pricing and Availability

The PairGain T1 Integrator has a U.S. list price of $4275 and will be available in Q1 1998.
