Interesting here the beetles definitely prefer potatoes over other Solonacea family kin.. However eggplants seem to be a delicacy especially the fatter European varieties.. not so much the Asia ones I prefer..

worse on some taters like Golden Yukon is they produce little tomato like fruits which are terribly poisonous but look like cherry tomatoes...

Anyway.. a trick picked up from PEI farmers ..

I sow mustard white/yellow doesn't matter apparently,. I use white.. and till it it in prior to potatoes.. mustard is sown in spring 3 weeks before last frost date,,, Till it in and plant taters... It inhibits the growth of potato beetles as it decomposes.. plus it is a green manure.. I feel also in my case.. overwintering beetles tend to search neighbour's taters on emergence as mine are planted later LOL.. This is only a theory of mine :)

Last year though I had minimal damage.. neighbours had worse.. Year before I was decimated.. I sow a second fall planting of mustard also and till it in before freeze... apparently the beetles overwinter as adults...

Gophers not a problem here.. voles yes but they like turnips... Groundhogs yes but they prefer greens...

Man, there's nothing like fresh potatoes from the garden...especially the fingerlings with some butter!

I agree 1000% Folks ask me why potatoes .. they're so cheap.. I just say taste these :)
