SIEMENS / NEWBRIDGE BROADBAND ALLIANCE BOLSTERS MAINSTREETXPRESS PRODUCT LINE WITH ATM ACCESS SWITCHES
MainStreetXpress(TM) 36140 and 36144 Switches Provide Multiservice Consolidation for Leased Line, Frame and Cell Relay and LAN Interconnect Services
KANATA, Ont., and MUNICH, Germany, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - The Public Communication Networks Group of Siemens AG and Newbridge Networks Corporation announced today two significant additions to the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(TM) broadband product line, the MainStreetXpress 36140 and MainStreetXpress 36144 Multiservice ATM Access Switches. The first public demonstration of the switches will be at ComNet in Washington, D.C. (Newbridge booth No.570), January 27-29, 1998. The products will be available in the second quarter of 1998. The MainStreetXpress 36140 and 36144 switches, with 11 and five ports, respectively, are highly cost-effective switches that enable the consolidation of multiple types of traffic for transport over an ATM network. They are designed for use as customer premises equipment (CPE) or customer-located equipment (CLE). The switches offer carriers and customers highly flexible and affordable access solutions. Their multiservice capabilities provide support for ATM, leased line, frame relay, SMDS DXI, and local area network (LAN) interfaces. The high-capacity access switches offer a non-blocking maximum throughput of 2 Gbit/s and are fully redundant to assure high availability. As with all MainStreetXpress products, both are fully manageable by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and MainStreetXpress 45020 Element Manager. ''As more public ATM services become available, having economical and scalable multiservice access capabilities becomes increasingly important,'' said Conrad Lewis, Executive Vice President Marketing and Product Management, Newbridge Networks. ''The MainStreetXpress product line, already the leader in broadband networks, is now even more robust with the addition of these two access switches.'' ''We have promised our customers that the Siemens / Newbridge broadband networking alliance would result in the world's most advanced ATM solutions,'' said Thomas Rambold, President, Broadband Networks, Public Communication Networks Group of Siemens AG. ''The addition of these ATM access switches demonstrates the power of our combined ATM engineering resources.'' Siemens Public Communication Networks Group (Munich, Germany) and Newbridge Networks (Kanata, Canada), two of the world leaders in ATM, formed a strategic networking alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. With this agreement, the two companies have unified their ATM product lines under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the industry's most extensive ATM research and development operation - more than 2,000 engineers in five countries. In North America, Siemens Public Communication Networks Group is represented by its subsidiary, Siemens Telecom Networks, Boca Raton, Florida.
