Dick, you know it is sad. They have always been an engineering driven company though. Their first PC the Rainbow was an insane disaster. It was one of those almost compatibles. The character set was different than the IBM set, because they thought they knew better. (Probably also thought that their customers would only be able to buy from them.) There were a few other "differences" that required application software to be different as well. But Compaq started about the same time in this area with the goal of making their PCs more compatible than the IBMs. I find great irony that this critical difference in choices has finally come full circle, with CPQ swallowing DEC.
