Around 30 were delivered. But there were problems in controlling the exact placement of the spark which effectively ruled out the imaging of type. GTO-DI II: this uses 24 laser diodes on each cylinder. The imaging unit replaces the damping system so the press runs with waterless inks. The Pearl system appeared first at Ipex 93. A blank plate is loaded in position and imaging takes place in a 12 minute cycle. The limiting factor is the speed of the press. QuickMaster DI: was shown to immediate effect at Drupa 90. Orders have now topped the 1,000 mark. Plates are loaded from an internal store in around six seconds. The plate is then imaged through 18 laser diodes per colour. The maximum is four-colours. Imaging time is six minutes with the cycle time between print runs of 1,000 sheets just 15 minutes. The press has no register adjustment, relying instead on the absolute accuracy of the imaging head. The polyester plate is pulled into position, then stretched again to ensure that there can be no movement once printing. Because this is a controlled mechanical process risks of tearing the plate are avoided. For reverse side printing, image placement is dictated at the workstation using imposition software. A Harlequin Rip is used to process incoming PostScript files. The Quickmaster DI is also waterless. Omni Adast: The first B2 press with Presstek imaging heads is the 705 CDI Dominant. The US agent imports the machines and retro fits the imaging heads into the damping system. Each imaging head has 32 diodes, 160 in all on a five-unit machine. The initial batch of three presses will be delivered by Christmas. It was shown at GraphExpo in Philadelphia. Nilpeter 3300: The Presstek imaging system is in an off-press unit which can image the premounted plates in turn. The plate and blanket cylinders on this press are interchangeable allowing the offpress imaging technique to be successful. There is almost no gap in the cylinder which is 13in wide and ranges in circumference from 13-15in. This is close to seamless printing and could interest web offset litho press manufacturers. The plate can take a 175lpi image, beyond the usual requirements for label printing. Pearlsetter: the dry process imagesetter that has been built by Sakurai under an Oem agreement. The same diode technology is used to expose a Presstek plate for either waterless or conventional printing. A standard Pearlsetter sells for $130,000, the same as an equivalent imagesetter. The Harlequin based Rip takes the price to $175,000. A second imaging head, at $75,000, can be added to the controller to either increase plate production or as a digital proofer. The Pearlsetter can also be supplied to suit a 520mm press or as a combination of 52 and 74 format plotters. It is an external drum device that has so far shipped close to 200 units.
