Maybe because "he said/he said," then followed up with more disinformation, maybe even fabricated documentary evidence like the fake Russian disinformation dossier that Hillary Clinton and the DNC paid for. The time and place wasn't a debate forum, nor the place to refute the other person's state of mind or alleged actions. Putin's m.o. is to cause chaos, stir up suspicion and doubt. He's very good at it, and many people play right into his hands.
