Respond to of 1576822 Ramadan in Algeria: Muslims vandalize statue of Virgin Mary at church in Oran May 19, 2020 8:00 AM BY ROBERT SPENCER Besides removing supposed temptations to idolatry, Islamic jihadists want to destroy the artifacts of non-Muslim civilizations because doing so testifies to the truth of Islam, as the Qur’an suggests that the destroyed remnants of ancient non-Muslim civilizations are a sign of Allah’s punishment of those who rejected his truth: Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth. (Qur’an 3:137) This is one of the foundations of the Islamic idea that pre-Islamic civilizations, and non-Islamic civilizations, are all jahiliyya — the society of unbelievers, which is worthless. Obviously this cuts against the idea of tourism of ancient sites and non-Muslim religious installations. V. S. Naipaul encountered this attitude in his travels through Muslim countries. For many Muslims, he observed in Among the Believers , “The time before Islam is a time of blackness: that is part of Muslim theology. History has to serve theology.” Naipaul recounted that some Pakistani Muslims, far from valuing the nation’s renowned archaeological site at Mohenjo Daro, saw its ruins as a teaching opportunity for Islam, recommending that Qur’an 3:137 be posted there as a teaching tool. “Ramadan in Algeria: Statue of the Virgin Mary vandalized in Oran,” translated from “Algérie : La statue de la vierge Marie vandalisée à Oran,” ObservAlgerie , May 17, 2020 (thanks to E.): The statue of the Virgin Mary of the Santa Cruz Christian Church in Oran in western Algeria has been the target of vandalism. The statue in the grotto of Our Lady of Santa Cruz was overturned with its stone base, and was damaged. It was an attempted robbery that went wrong, according to what was reported on Saturday, May 16, by the Arabic-language newspaper El Khabar. According to the same source, the public prosecutor presiding over the court of Oran ordered the placement under arrest warrant of four (4) church guards. According to the first elements of the investigation, they are behind this criminal act. Indeed, the chapel of Santa Cruz built of stones extracted from the mountain of Murdjadjo where it is perched, was the subject of an attempted theft earlier this month. Four looters allegedly destroyed the statue of the Virgin Mary by attempting to steal it. They even destroyed other holy monuments in their path. During the investigations, suspicion turned against the four men responsible for guarding the place. The investigators relied on the respondents’ statements. Indeed, the four guards of the place of worship gave totally contradictory versions at the time of the depositions. Officials in the municipality of Oran said that these individuals, who were supposed to guard the chapel of Santa Cruz, ransacked the place of worship and destroyed the statue of the Virgin Mary by trying to steal it in order to sell it on the black market, as an object of antiquity. The situation of Christians in Algeria is worrisome In addition, the Christian community in Algeria has for several years denounced the intimidation to which the faithful are subject. Many Christians have denounced the series of closings of churches around the nation. Several evangelical associations and organizations have called for an end to “the increasing pressure and intimidation from the Algerian government”….
