I agree on the Jerusalem artichokes.. hence the warning to Sun.. I know someone else that had that exact experience..

The basil makes sense.. they go well together.. companion planting is worth thinking about.. and sometimes the reason for poor crops also...

as an aside .. garlic goes well with lots of things... it is a great companion plant.. so aside from my main field of garlic.. i stick it all over the place :)
