Caxton, qdog, engineer, Michael, (even non-tech surfer Mike if the have the answer)

with all the attention of the standards, I still don't quite understand the technical aspects of the proposals.

Had the two camps already demonstrated that their respective proposed standards will work? Is there a possibility that two years down the road, the winning camp cannot come up with a functional product for the now adopted standard?
