RMX from Intel was the first real multi-tasking, protected mode OS for the PC.

When did RMX come out? I used to work for a company that some of you may remember called Microport. We developed a port of UNIX for 80286 machines back in 1986-87 timeframe. It also had an add-on from Locus Corporation that allowed running in virtual 8086 mode and running several DOS sessions concurrently with UNIX. You could even store DOS files in the UNIX file system and from the UNIX command line mix the usage of DOS and UNIX commands without having to be aware which OS they ran under. It was a pretty cool product.
