It is a master planned community that was originally created under a 1970s government program for a new town initiative. It is one of the few that survived and prospered. George Mitchell, a native Galvestonian, was instrumental in its creation. He owned Mitchell Energy, the company that gave us fracking, and he had a history of doing things for communities. He was instrumental in reviving the Strand in Galveston, for example. He also helped bankroll TAMU Galveston where I got my bachelor's degree.

The Woodlands is also very, very white. We were part of a home school group there. It was sort of amusing. There were also a few kids from some survivalist groups around Conroe. So you had a mixture of kids from upper middle class and kids in camo pants and shirts with a disturbing amount of expertise with AR-15s.
