Actually in part I may be confusing the LBOs of the 80's with the Compaq deal. I have not closely followed any present day mergers. But I am basing some of my observation on the magnitude of the takeover, and the focus that the takeover does or does not demostrate of the company. This I think is an important element to the future results of a takeover effort. I will need to look into this further with Compaq and see if that have a very well defined business plan in place that would describe their takeovers of Tandem and DEC in that context.

I have noticed as a customer that the quality of service and the product of a company does deteriorate for a period of time after a takeover. I am speaking from my experience as a customer instead of a shareholder when I say this. And this taking on of large committments outside the comapny's area of expertise has lead to problems for some companies like Novell. But in Novell's case, it may have been a symptom of deeper problems within the organization than the decision that lead to their troubled future.
