[universal aDSL group]

Steve --

This is the first I've heard the term "universal aDSL Working Group." I'll try to see what I can dig up. I know everyone here is talking about the CPQ-INTC-MSFT sub-group known as SIG (not sure designations), but that's it. Everywhere you turn, there's talk of "end-to-end" highspeed systems. Today's keynote by Ivan Seidenberg, BA's COO, emphasized bandwidth. Roughly transcribed: "Bandwidth pushed growth in '97. The spring is winding tighter. DSL, cable (and others) just about to burst.. . . [the] world wide web data customer is at the center.. . . demand will outstrip supply in bandwidth. . . [telcos] need market-oriented business model to encourage regulators. . . . challenge: how to jump start the industry.. . . in '97 dollars went to telecommunications. . . to deregulated markets. High bandwidth created new phone companies. . . CAPs and CLECS $2B a year to develop companies. [there was] 70% growth in market caps. Qwest, Level3, ISC (?) now spending money. . . At BA growth is vertical: 15% in new lines; 35% in ISDN; 30%caller ID. Cable highest growth in '97. . . . multi-billion upgrades. . . digital wireless $40 B to date.

. . . repositioning around high bandwidth needs [buildout] equals four Teleports per year. . . . joined consortium (were ADSL pioneers) . . . available later this year.

[discussion of Inter LATA problems with FCC.] Rules for one market have been applied to another. Incumbents control technologies --- have tooffer new techs to competitors at fire sale rates. . . regulators need to deregulate Internet for all players. Right now BA can't invest in Internet b/c it's considered long distance. Need to deregulate data market and free bandwidth. . . free ADSL technology from unbundling. . . while keeping check list in place. . . will spur speed of technology. . . . [must] deregulate business market. . . business and highspeed data services."

Sorry this is a rough transcription. Bottom line: get the FCC to support telcos in Internet market. . . . level the playing field.

More later.

BTW, just talked to dynamic DSL company out of Dallas, TX: Efficient Networks. They're private now but plan a "public event" later this year. Put it on list of companies to follow.

Cheers!
