Since University I learned that those involved in politics are in general worthless people and they build a career on double standards but basically with no principles or respect for the other or self honor.. As to the other part of your question go back in history and read about the "bestiary" in the coliseums and those that enjoyed the burning slaughtering and killing of humans, without giving a damn about the people that where scarified there for the sole purpose of entertainment. I presume not a lot has been changed in the human genome since, only in the venue of execution. At the time the Romans where thinking of themselves as very civilized so imagine what was going on in the so called "barbarian" nations.
