If it's just about George Floyd, then this should be an open-n-shut case. Cop recklessly kills a perp while detaining him, cop gets arrested, indicted, tried, and convicted, end of story. But it's not. This is about the black community feeling angry and fearful about a lot of high profile incidents that happened to them recently. Here are the two that happened recently: - Woman in Manhattan Central Park calls the cops on a black man because said black man told her to put her dog on a leash. The woman even said, "There's an African-American man who is threatening my life." - Ahmaud Arbery got gunned down by a couple of white vigilantes who were making a "citizen's arrest" on him. This is scaring almost everyone in the black community, along with many others, especially some of my Asian friends. One Asian girl I know (not the one assaulted in Seattle) was pretty shaken by what happened to Ahmaud Arbery and now feels nervous whenever she goes out for a jog. (I too am an avid runner, but I take my safety for granted given that I'm a relatively big Asian dude.) As for Floyd, poor guy got the short end of the stick, but police have to deal with perps who resist arrest all the time. Most of these police officers show professionalism and restraint when dealing with these difficult situations, but given the stress of the job, some are going to cross the line. They need to be dealt with and training improved. The current narrative is that police, especially white police officers, are out to hunt for black people. That's why there are riots breaking out all across America, from Los Angeles to San Jose to Oakland to Chicago to Houston to Atlanta, etc. etc. etc. People have no faith in the rule of law anymore. That's where push comes to shove. Gotta restore order. Gotta follow due process and make sure justice comes to that officer, who by the way had like 18 complaints against him throughout his career. (Most police officers ought to have no more than a few.) Most of all, gotta demonstrate that race relations can improve when we actively build bridges instead of fostering sectarianism. But that's the real difficult part. Social media exacerbates sectarianism. Politics exacerbates sectarianism. Orange Man exacerbates sectarianism. Joe "You Ain't Black" exacerbates sectarianism. Time to say, "NO MORE! " Tenchusatsu
