It seems to me that certain key products which use GaAs have significant lead time in development and a manufacturer would not easily switch to a new technology (look at the time MOT has spent and continues to spend, in the development of a CDMA handset).

Note also that you should add AHA to your list of GaAs stocks to follow. This stock is at a much more reasonable P/E and has not dropped this week with the others.
