that is a weak and shallow response. why find a cure for cancer??? what does the development of higher technology have to do with producing a lower cost unit? as far as business is concerned, this argument makes no sense. andy grove has stated in the past that some of these products have significant r&d expenses and will be pressured initially pricewise due to these costs. standard business. margins than increase as the product becomes a standard. rev's increase as r&d cost are "paid"... as the product becomes phased out, margins are reduced, thus the need for new products.

there is a need to compete for amd, if for moral alone. not many car companies still producing 1987 chevettes...

<Sub-$500 PC will rule.>

And what exactly are they going to "rule"? Are they going to rule the infrastructure of a global computer network? Are they going to rule the servers in large internantional corporations? Are they going to rule in replacing mini computers (e.g. AS400)? Are they going to rule in replacing mainframes? Are they going to rule in scientific applications and research being conducted by millions of people around the world? Are they going to rule in CADAM design? Are they going to rule in computer animation design?

You continue to think that because you don't need any more than a $500 PC that a market doesn't exist.

<J.S: <..until Slot II machines in a few months and Merced next year...what does AMD have to compete against those products??????>

I think there is no need to. These product you mention will not perform significantly better than today's products.>

Do you seriously believe that Merced "will not peform significantly better than today's products"?

The low end will be the low end. Intel will get more than its fair share of revenue and more importantly profit. They will continue to dole out crumbs to AMD and NSM. However, the high end is where the real money will be made. Intel has just started to tap this huge potential and is positioning itself to become as dominant at the high end as they have been on the desktop. That's why IBM, SUNW, DEC and everyone else is backing Merced. Merced is the future of computing unitl Intel moves on to the next step of the technology revolution.
