Just a comment on microclusters for the interested. It is interesting in the M-M (Metal to Metal) bonds there is a great heat of formation as proof of the intensity of the bonds. So says a fairly recent Advanced Inorganic Chemistry Book. There are two kinds of clusters, those with great heat of formation, those with low heat of formation and the cool ones. The cool ones do not react much different than the normal elements and alloys would so they are arguably not clusters. The bonding release of heat energy would be expected for producing stable molecules of anything I would assume.
Also the magic moments (no I mean magnetic moment) is also altered for these species. Has to do with parallel syncronous spin so they say.
Actually, this is 20 year old early information on some of the first clusters discovered and synthesized. The book did not say they were synthesized, but since the heat of formation was measured, they must have been made as synthetics in order to get the measurements. I guess in studing the thermodynamics of the cluster formation they used microcluster thermometers. They must be real little. mike
